Mitzies Bio
I have written poetry and short prose all my life. I have a BSc in Psychotherapy and a Diploma in Expressive Arts Therapy. I used writing techniques in one-to-one and group therapeutic work. I worked with women experiencing Domestic Abuse and facilitated group work through writing and art with women in refuge. My poetry was first published in A Fistful of Pens: an anthology of poetry and short fiction in 1988. Paula Meehan and Martina Evans have influenced my poetry. Donal Ryan, Nuala O’Connor, and many others have influenced my fiction writing. In 2022 I gained a first-class honours MA in Creative Writing from the University of Limerick. I completed my dissertation through poetry under the supervision of Poet Emily Cullen.
- My poetry was shortlisted for the Bridport Poetry Competition, 2021 and a fiction piece was long-listed for the Cranked Anvil Short Story Competition, 2021.
- My poem ‘Hope’ was published by Poetry Day Ireland/UL Arts Office, Pocket Poems Posted, April 2021.
- My short story, ‘Portobello’, was published in the Irish Times, Aug 2021.
- My poem ‘The Gag Clause’ was published in Washing Windows Too, Irish Women Write Poetry, 2022.
- A short story, Endings, was published in the University of Limerick’s Ogham Stone, April 2023.
- My poem ‘I will sit down and write when I have…’ was published in Washing Windows 111, 2023.
