Fred Johnston has published nine collections of poetry, two collections of short stories (one of which was published in French), , three novels, countless poetry reviews and a play-with-music, on the life of Sir John Franklin entitled ‘No Earthly Pole.’ Fred was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and educated there and in Toronto, Canada. He wrote and broadcast programmes on the new poets of the West of Ireland for RTE radio and produced a commercial cassette, ‘Poets in the West'.
Fred founded Galway’s Western Writers’ Centre and was also one of the founders of the Irish Writers’ Co-operative (Co-Op Books). In 1986 he founded Galway’s Củirt literature festival, (initially a poetry-only festival). He has received a Prix de l’Ambassade for translation of a French poet and was invited to be writer-in-residence at the Princess Grace Irish Library at Monaco. He has received an award from The Patrick and Katherine Kavanagh Trust, and bursaries from The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the Irish Arts Council (Rep. of Ireland), and Galway City Council. Most recently, his poetry has appeared in The Guardian, The Spectator, The Financial Times, The New Statesman, Poetry Ireland Review, Cyphers, The Irish Times and has been broadcast on RTE radio. He also contributed work to The Great Book of Ireland. His most recent collection of poetry, ‘Rogue States,’ was published from Salmon Poetry in 2019.
